Neil Hutchings opened Devon Bonsai Nursery in December 2009. In the heart of Devon, just north of Dartmoor. The nursery is easily accessible being just a quarter of a mile from Woodleigh Junction on the A 30. Less than 10 miles from Exeter. Junction 31, M5.
Neil has had a lifelong interest in trees. This progressed into growing bonsai and later developed into a fuller understanding of the Art of Bonsai. Much of this progress was as a result of the knowledge and experience gained from joining Cornwall Bonsai Society in 1987 and from visiting several of the leading bonsai nurseries in Japan, including Mansei-en in Omiya Bonsai Village and the Hana-ki Centre near Kanuma (Satsuki Azaleas).
Neil remained a keen member of Cornwall Bonsai Society for several years before taking up the role of Chairman for two years.
After moving to Devon in 2002, with more space available Neil’s collection of Bonsai grew and with an overflowing polytunnel, outside growing beds were constructed.
Keen to learn more about every aspect of the growing and development of bonsai, Neil joined Exeter Bonsai Society. This progressive and growing group of bonsai enthusiasts encourages both newcomers and more experienced members to acquire a deeper understanding of the horticultural and aesthetic principles underpinning good Bonsai. These same principles of sharing experience and information on how to successfully grow bonsai underpin the development of Devon Bonsai Nursery.
